How to apply for membership

NYPAP is an organization of plein air painters who live and work in New York and the northernmost counties of New Jersey. Members with email addresses registered with the State Coordinator are eligible to vote in annual elections.

Associate members

Any plein air painter who lives in or paints in New York or northern New Jersey for at least part of the year is welcome to join as an associate member.

Email us with the following information:

Name

Address

City, State, ZIP

A JPEG can be included to add to the website.

The coordinator will work with you to determine whether a specific chapter or an "at large" membership fits your needs.

Chapters vs. "At Large"

Each chapter sets its own rules about participation requirements, paint-outs, etc. In most cases, it makes sense for a painter to join the closest chapter. However, if the chapter style doesn’t match your style, you’re free to join as an "at large" member. An example of this would be the plein air painter who can’t commit to the number of paint-outs his or her chapter requires.

Most chapters will happily send you their painting schedule whether or not you’re a member.

What is a Signature Member?

Signature Members produce a high percentage of their works directly, on location. They sell their work.  They are expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in all aspects of painting and career.  Signature Members may state their affiliations with NYPAP in their promotional materials, as well as use NYPAP within their signature.

Candidates must be members at the Associate level for a year before being considered for Signature status.  We will be jurying members for SIGNATURE STATUS, beginning in September 2009. Read the following paragraphs carefully because they very carefully describe the jurying process.  If you have questions, please contact me through the contact address on this website.

What to submit

Links to digital images of ten plein air paintings, done in the field.

a. At least five of these paintings must have been completed within the prior calendar year. All must be substantially done in the field, with minimal studio tweaking. None of these paintings can be more than two years old.

b. Digital images should be no less than 500 by 400 pixels—anything smaller will not provide enough detail for the jurors. They must be uncompressed, in the JPG file format (with a .jpg extension).

c. Digital images can be on the artist’s website, on a gallery website, or through a third-party site such as http://photobucket.com/.

d. Digital images should be as true to the original art as is possible. No significant adjustment to the light levels or digital reworking is permitted.

e. Do not submit digital images directly; the links are forwarded to the jurors.

A detailed description of each painting, noting:

f. Dimensions;

g. Media;

h. Surface (e.g. canvas, watercolor paper, board, sanded paper);

i. Date it was painted;

j. Location—this should be moderately precise, e.g. "Mendon Ponds Park" is acceptable; "The Catskills" is not.

An artist’s resume or CV, listing your training, shows you have participated in, and awards.

A website, if available, where additional images may be viewed (this is not mandatory).

The Jurying Process

Submissions are made to the Executive Director by email. The Executive Director will not forward applications to the jurors unless they are complete.

The six jurors’ identities are not revealed to the candidates; they are painters and members of NYPAP. The jurors will review applications and return their comments confidentially by email to the Executive Director. In the event that a juror knows a candidate, he or she will recuse. The Executive Director will review the juror commentary and forward the decision to the candidate in a timely fashion. In the event of a deadlocked candidate, the Executive Director will vote.

All proceedings of the jury are confidential and not for review by the candidate.

In some cases, the jury may ask for additional images.

Maintaining Signature Member Status

To maintain Signature status, a member must continue working at the level outlined above. Verification in the form of new images and an updated CV may be required periodically.
