Activities & Announcements
To NYPAP Members
I have created a
group for NYPAP members where you can meet fellow plein air painters across the country, as well as list announcements and
events for yourself or your CHAPTER in NY State. Through the chat feature you can communicate with fellow painters.
It's all very easy to negotiate and join. http://pleinairartists.ning.com/group/groupNYPAP CHAPTER leaders may connect your group to NYPAP. ______________________
Art Events at Thacher Nature Center, Voorheesville, NY
Sunday, July 12 – 10am – 1pm Garden Art Walk
Thacher Nature Center
The
Garden Art Walk is coming up on Sunday, July 12 at the Nature Center. The Garden Walk was started last
year to highlight both the grounds of the Nature Center – particularly the gardens, and the very creative local artistic
talent. Basically, artists set up around the grounds of the Nature Center. They can
paint, draw, sketch, photograph, sculpt – whatever they are comfortable doing. We still have space available for any folks who would like
to come and draw/sketch/paint/sculpt at the Nature Center that day. The event is open to the public, so
you will be painting plein air while patrons pass by and admire your work. The event runs from 10 –
1. If it’s really hot you can come inside the Nature Center and paint there – there are some
great mounts, etc. to paint. Jacqueline
Smith will be teaching a pastel landscape workshop that day. Please register for the workshop if you would
like to attend that. We
print up brochures, with bios about each of the artists participating. If you are interested, please let
me know and send me a short bio. The deadline to sign up and for submitting bios is July 1

ARTISTS IN THE PARKS
The basic format of Artists in the Parks,
as it stands now, is that the PIPC will offer member artists VIP parking access (free parking in lots where
you usually have to pay, and seasonal roadside pull-off privileges) as well as the opportunity to contract individually with
various visitors’ centers to sell their work on consignment. Depending on the site, this might mean anything from original
pieces to artist-created note cards or postcards. Artists give back to the park by allowing fair use of at least 2 high-resolution
images of work they create in the park per year for promotional and educational material (newsletters, flyers, study guides,
etc.) Artists can also collaborate together to use the PIPC/Artists in the Parks name for putting together group exhibits.
The Artists
in the Parks website (www.artistsintheparks.com) will be linked from the PIPC/Parks Conservancy site, and will be open to the public with galleries of lower-resolution
or watermarked images, as well as artist bios and links to individual artists' websites. All members will have a password
to access the administrative sections of the site where they can update their bios, add links, and upload new images.
There will also be an updateable community calendar where we can advertise both Artists in the Parks events and shows or classes
held by the individual members.
There will also be a password protected gallery of high-res images that the PIPC can
access. This gallery will be the place where the member artists upload between 2-5 images per year of art that they have
created in the parks. By uploading these images, the artists agree to let the PIPC use them for free in educational and promotional
materials. These images will NOT be used on things like mugs, mouse pads, key chains, or anything that is sold to earn money
for the parks. That is definitely a possibility for the future, but unless an artist specifically wants to donate the image,
I want to make sure that the PIPC pays the artist for licensing of their work. That's kind of a long term goal, so we'll
cross that bridge when we come to it.
Other long-term projects that we hope to pursue include a printed calendar of images
from the group to sell throughout the park system, a PIPC Press coffee table book of art and poetry created in the
parks, and a large-scale, juried art festival in conjunction with the re-opening of the Bear Mountain Inn. Although we
don’t have a dedicated gallery space yet, I am working on getting either a room or hallway in the re-opened Inn that
is solely used for Artists in the Parks group and individual exhibits.
To join the group, all artists need to do is fill out a PIPC Volunteer
Service Agreement and an Artist Registration/Permit. After filling it out, the artists will mail me the hard copy. I'll
get the required park signatures to get you your 2009 dashboard parking permit and password to access the administrative pages
of the website (once they become available). We are not currently requiring a merit-based application or portfolio review.
It's important to me that in this pilot year of the program we remain open to a wide variety of mediums, styles and experience
levels, and create a group that supports the work of professionals and newer artists alike.
Ultimately, the central idea
of this program is to treat artists as essential partners in preserving and celebrating the parklands. I want the program
to be mutually beneficial, but at this point, I am most interested in creating opportunities, publicity, and networks for
the member artists.
If you are interested the Volunteer Service Agreement and Artist Registration/Permit may
be requested through Ted Beardsley. You will need to print, fill out and return
BOTH forms.

______________________________ Laura Martinez-Bianco is a plein air painter who works in the Hudson Valley. Working plein air enables
Laura to create her paintings on site, quickly capturing the light and color of a specific moment. Laura’s five-day class
in Radicofani will focus on plein air pastel painting in one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Italy. Previous experience
in pastel is not required, just a willingness to explore and enjoy the outdoors and this lush medium.
The classes
will be held at La Palazzina and at other local sites. Each class will be three hours, consisting of general lessons
and individual instruction. There will be time each day to paint along side the instructor and work on skills and concepts
introduced during the week. Classes will cover composition, value, color relationships, and illusion of depth in a landscape,
incorporating drawing techniques, and the use of pastels as a painting medium. All classes will conclude with a critique and
discussion of the day’s work. To read about Laura, click here.
